Immerse Yourself in Yoga

Take your yoga practice and experience to another level. A yoga training course provides a way to learn more about yoga, anatomy, history, meditation, Ashtanga, and yourself. Go deeper into the whole yoga experience. Some take the course to work towards a teacher training certificate. Others take the course to improve themselves, to spend time learning with a master teacher, and to renew their body and spirit. Last year a lot of the students were already teachers. They took the opportunity to study with a master teacher and go deeper in their studies.

Learning with a Master Teacher

One of the world’s master Ashtanga teachers, Mark Darby, leads the program.

Darby combines thirty years of teaching experience with a childlike sense of wonder and passion. He spent six months a year teaching workshops in Korea, Russia, India, France, and Italy. At age 65 he does a handstand like someone half his age. At our retreat with him in Costa Rica he was surfing like a superstar. Learn his special techniques and tools which underline the way he teaches. Expect to be challenged, overwhelmed with knowledge, and also to laugh, lots.

Darby began studying yoga in the early eighties with Pattabhi Jois, the founder of Ashtanga yoga. Often he and his soon-to-be wife Joanne were the only students in the room. In Mysore, India, the birthplace of modern Ashtanga yoga, he received an unparalleled education and training.

In the photo on the right Darby is pictured with his wife Joanne along with Pattabhi Jois and his whole family. The small boy in the photo is Sharath, the current director of the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute.

Screen Shot 2015-07-13 at 2.28.17 PMIt is a rare opportunity to study with an Ashtanga teacher so closely connected to the source of the practice who also combines insights from years of experience. Darby’s early years in Mysore, India with Pattabhi Jois are described in the book Guruji.  In 2010 Eddie Stern compiled the book Guruji about Pattabhi Jois, the founder of Ashtanga Yoga.  The book profiles a portrait of Guruji as revealed through the stories of his leading students. The book includes a chapter on Darby’s journey through India which led him to meet with Pattabhi Jois.  While studying in Mysore he was introduced to Joanne, his wife.  During their initial years they were often the only two students studying with Pattabhi Jois every morning and afternoon.
