About Yoga


  • How is Yoga different from stretching and normal exercise?
    Yoga involves more conscious awareness of breath and the work you are doing with your body. Poses and movements are unique and have specific purposes and effects on the body. The breath is used to deepen stretches and flexibility. Focus and concentration are key ingredients in Yoga practice
  • What is Ashtanga Yoga?
    Ashtanga Yoga is the system of yoga taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India. It is designed to purify the body and still the mind. The practice is characterized by Vinyasa, the precise coordination of movement with breath from posture to posture. All of our teachers have trained under a teacher who has spent time studying with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in India.
  • Is the yoga practice done in a hot room?
    No. It's not Bikram Yoga. It's a hot, sweaty practice but that heat is generated internally -- from a continuous flow of the asanas, ujjayi breathing and the bandhas. The room should be warm from your work and the windows might fog up from the heat of the practice.
  • How is Ashtanga different than other forms of yoga?
    Ashtanga yoga is distinguished by Vinyasa, the formal system of rhythmic breathing and movement connecting one posture to the next into a complete practice. In general, the postures are the same as in other forms of hatha yoga, but in Ashtanga yoga the postures are in a set sequence that is done uninterrupted from beginning to end. Ashtanga is thus known as a vigorous form of yoga
  • What should I wear and bring to class?
    Wear comfortable exercise clothing. Stay away from bulky clothing and things that are restrictive. Yoga is practiced in bare feet. Shoes may be left on our shoe shelf upon arriving at the yoga center
  • Do I need to have my own mat?
    We provide mats and other props at no charge for classes. If you prefer to use your own mat you may purchase one. We have mats from thin to thick available for purchase. Regular students will prefer their own mats so they can practice at home between classes.
  • What do I do to prepare for class?
    -bring a mat if you have one -refrain from eating 2-3 hours before class -you may want to bring a towel as you might sweat alot -Honor and respect your limits. Acknowledge that your body and mind will feel different every day; listen to what your body tells you and practice following your breath
  • What if I've had an injury or recent surgery?
    Before you begin any exercise program, get permission from your physician or physical therapist. If you have medical approval to exercise, be sure to inform your Yoga instructor of your condition and limitations. Take care of yourself in class and avoid doing anything that doesn't feel right or that causes you pain.
  • Can anyone do yoga?
    Yes - apart from the lazy! Although the style and intensity might need to be amended.
